A vital component of every house or camp lot is the septic system. In order to install a septic system, it is important to have an understanding of what characteristics must be present in your land. Traditional septic systems only work if the soil in the leach area is sufficiently permeable, so that it can readily absorb the liquid waste flowing into it. Additionally, there must also be at least a few feet of good soil from the bottom of the leach pipes to rock or impervious hardpan below, or to the water table. Whether installing a full septic system, a grey water system, or an outhouse, the piece of land will be required to pass a soils test and a perc test, which will determine if the above characteristics are present to support a septic system. The tests determine the condition and drainage capacity of your soil as well as the type and size of drainage field you will need for the system you are installing. Once you receive a permit for your septic system, you can then begin installing it. Installing a septic system on your own is not recommended unless you have previous training and experience. At Treeline we do have experience installing septic systems, and we would be glad to help you with any such project! Cub would be glad to answer any of your questions at 207-944-1027.
